More Allegations Surface in Israeli Accounts of Gaza War (March 21, 2009)

Tyler Hicks

Times Topics: Israel

In 1990, Mr. Zamir, then a parachute company commander in the reserves, was sentenced to prison for refusing to guard a ceremony involving religious Jews visiting the West Bank city of Nablus. For some, that refusal is a badge of honor; for others it is an act of insubordination.

JERUSALEM — The publication late last week of eyewitness accounts by Israeli soldiers alleging acute mistreatment of Palestinian civilians in the recent Gaza fighting highlights a debate here about the rules of war. But it also exposes something else: the clash between secular liberals and religious nationalists for control over the army and society.

AFTERMATH A sign of the intense violence: A donkey’s carcass lies where it was shot.

Several of the testimonies, published by an institute that runs a premilitary course and is affiliated with the left-leaning secular kibbutz movement, showed a distinct impatience with religious soldiers, portraying them as self-appointed holy warriors.

A soldier, identified by the pseudonym Ram, is quoted as saying that in Gaza, “the rabbinate brought in a lot of booklets and articles and their message was very clear: We are the Jewish people, we came to this land by a miracle, God brought us back to this land and now we need to fight to expel the non-Jews who are interfering with our conquest of this holy land. This was the main message, and the whole sense many soldiers had in this operation was of a religious war.”

Dany Zamir, the director of the one-year premilitary course who solicited the testimonies and then leaked them, leading to a promise by the military to investigate, is quoted in the transcripts as expressing anguish over the growing religious nationalist elements of the military.

“If clerics are anointing us with oil and sticking holy books in our hands, and if the soldiers in these units aren’t representative of the whole spectrum of the Jewish people, but rather of certain segments of the population, what can we expect?” he said. “To whom do we complain?”

For the first four decades of Israel’s existence, the army — like many of the country’s institutions — was dominated by kibbutz members who saw themselves as secular, Western and educated. In the past decade or two, religious nationalists, including many from the settler movement in the West Bank, have moved into more and more positions of military responsibility. (In Israeli society, they are a growing force, distinct from, and more modern than, the black-garbed ultra-Orthodox, who are excused from military service.)

In many cases, the religious nationalists have ascended to command positions from precisely the kind of premilitary college course that Mr. Zamir runs — but theirs are run by the religious movements rather than his secular one, meaning that the competition between him and them is both ideological and careerist.

“The officer corps of the elite Golani Brigade is now heavily populated by religious right-wing graduates of the preparatory academies,” noted Moshe Halbertal, a Jewish philosophy professor who co-wrote the military code of ethics and who is himself religiously observant but politically liberal. “The religious right is trying to have an impact on Israeli society through the army.”

For Mr. Halbertal, like for the vast majority of Israelis, the army is an especially sensitive institution because it has always functioned as a social cauldron, throwing together people from all walks of life and scores of ethnic and national backgrounds, and helping form them into a cohesive society with social networks that carry on throughout their lives.

Those who oppose the religious right have been especially concerned about the influence of the military’s chief rabbi, Brig. Gen. Avichai Rontzki, who is himself a West Bank settler and who was very active during the war, spending most of it in the company of the troops in the field.

He took a quotation from a classical Hebrew text and turned it into a slogan during the war: “He who is merciful to the cruel will end up being cruel to the merciful.”

A controversy then arose when a booklet handed out to soldiers was found to contain a rabbinical edict against showing the enemy mercy. The Defense Ministry reprimanded the rabbi.

At the time, in January, Avshalom Vilan, then a leftist member of Parliament, accused the rabbi of having “turned the Israeli military’s activity from fighting out of necessity into a holy war.”

Immediately after Israel withdrew its settlers and soldiers from Gaza in 2005 and then from several West Bank settlements, there was a call to disband certain religious programs in the army because some soldiers in them said they would refuse to obey future orders to disband settlements. After the rise of Hamas in Gaza and the increase in rocket attacks on Israel, that discussion died down.

But Yaron Ezrahi, a leftist political scientist at Hebrew University who has been lecturing to military commanders, said that the call to close those programs should now be revived because what was evident in Gaza was that the humanistic tradition from which a code of ethics is derived was not being sufficiently observed there.

The dispute over control of the army is not only ideological. It is also personal, as all politics is in this small, intimate country. Those who disagree with the chief rabbi have vilified him. Those who are unhappy with what Mr. Zamir did by leaking the transcript of the Gaza soldiers’ testimonies last week have spread word that he is a leftist ideologue out to harm Israel.

treason. A quiet campaign began on Thursday regarding Mr. Zamir’s leftist sympathies, to discredit the transcript he publicized.

At the same time, Rabbi Rontzki’s numerous sayings and writings have been making the rounds among leftist intellectuals. He has written, for example, that what others call “humanistic values” are simply subjective feelings that should be subordinate to following the law of the Torah.

He has also said that the main reason for a Jewish doctor to treat a non-Jew on the Sabbath, when work is prohibited but treating the sick and injured is expected, is to avoid exposing Diaspora Jews to hatred.

Mr. Halbertal, the Jewish philosopher who opposes the attitude of Rabbi Rontzki, said the divide that is growing in Israel is not only between religious and secular Jews but among the religious themselves. The debate is over three issues — the sanctity of land versus life; the relationship between messianism and Zionism; and the place of non-Jews in a sovereign Jewish state.

The religious left argues that the right has made a fetish of the land of Israel instead of letting life take precedence, he said. The religious left also rejects the messianic nature of the right’s Zionist discourse, and it argues that Jewish tradition values all life, not primarily Jewish life.

“The right tends to make an equation between authenticity and brutality, as if the idea of humanism were a Western and alien implant to Judaism,” he said. “They seem not to know that nationalism and fascism are also Western ideas and that hypernationalism is not Jewish at all.”

Maybe an answer to The Lubavitch,Israeli, and Indian Triangle ?

The Nariman House affair brings the Mossad angle to the fore. Two of the `hostages’ killed in the Narimam House were identified as Rabbi Gabreil Holtzberg and his wife Rivka. They ran the center as spokespersons of the Chabad Lubavitch movement.
Now the Chabad movement is one of the many sects within Israel and Judaism. But of late it has come under the Zionist influence. Now what is Zionism? A brief digression would suffice: Zionism is the political ideology of racist Jews, just like Hindutva is the political ideology of a section of `race conscious’ Hindus. Just as a majority of Sanatani Hindus have opposed Hindutva, a majority of Jews oppose Zionism and its fascist-anti-religious tone.
In opposition to the teachings of Judaism, the orthodox Jew religion, Zionists want to dominate the world; they see the `Jewish race’ as the most important, almost divine, race in the world. Zionists are opposed to democracy and even the concept of naitonhood. Zionists believe in creating murder and mayhem as a matter of policy.
In America, Zionists have entered into an alliance with the American elites–the White-Anglo-Saxon Protestant (WASP) forces–which rule America. The reasons for this alliance lie in the way the Zionist agenda matches with that of the American corporate and WASP elite and is beyind the scope of this article.

People who do not understand Zionism will never be able to understand what happened in Mumbai.

Back to members of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement killed at Nariman House–people have asked how come the Rabbi and his wife were killed if Mossad is involved in the Mumbai terror attack?
The answer to this is being forwarded by Jewish anti-Zionist websites. They also detail the sectarian history of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement:

The attack on Mumbai spotlights the ultra-orthodox (haredi) Chabad-Lubavitch community and its international outreach network. When Chabad outreach (keruv) started in the 1950s, it seemed rather intellectually dishonest because the organization used nostalgia for a never-existent Jewish past as a hook to enmesh secular or secularized Jews in ultra-orthodox (haredi) practice as hozrim bitshuvah (returnees, sometimes improperly called baalei tshuvah), but on the whole the activity was mostly harmless in contrast with current Chabad activities, which long ago crossed the border into dangerous territory.
As the Lubavitcher organization has become larger and wealthier — partially because mobilization for keruv has brought large contributions, members have shown a propensity for corruption.
Yet, the Lubavitchers have worked closely with Jewish racists like Lawrence Summers and Alan Dershowitz in the ongoing attempt to control discourse on American campuses. The wealthy Russian Lubavitcher hozer bitshuvah Lev Leviev openly supports Zionist terrorism and settlement building in the Palestinan occupied territories. Possibly because of Leviev Chabad-Lubavitch has openly become involved in Putin’s struggles with Russian Jewish oligarchs.
Still, there is an even more sinister aspect to the Lubavitcher organization.
Because Lubavitcher outreach offices are located in some of the most important political, corporate and university centers throughout the world, the Lubavitchers have put together a network that is incomparable for corporate and international espionage as well as for the secret exchange of information. Because Chabad Houses could potentially act as safe houses, where there would be no record of a person’s stay.
Most people do not take the Lubavitchers seriously, but I have visited Chabad houses and encountered senior Israeli government or military officials (and probably intelligence agents). One can easily imagine that Neocon intelligentsia trying to develop a relationship with Hindutva (?????????) intelligentsia or politicians might have used the Chabad Nariman House as a meeting place.

Here a Jew is saying that he has visited Chabad houses and that he has seen covert operations going on and the involvement of senior Government and military officials of Israel. This Jew writer is also talking openly about a Neo-Con-Chabad-Hindutva tie-up!
The Jew writer mentions the Mossad involvement in Chabad Houses:

Because the Lubavitchers provide an unconditional welcome to all Jews in the hope of bringing them closer to the Lubavitcher way of life, the Lubavitchers have been open to potential subversion by Israeli intelligence organizations. Mossad and Shin Bet found it quite easy to penetrate the haredi community during the Yossele Affair. Jewish politics has often involved infiltration and subversion of one political group by another. The David Project Israel Advocacy organization has used its educational programs as a means to infiltrate more mainstream Jewish communal organizations with radical Islamophobes and Jabotinskian Zionists.
To Zionize haredi groups that practice outreach, the Israeli government need only give encouragement to Zionistically indoctrinated Hebrew-speaking young people to participate in outreach programs, and in a few years the targeted haredi community is thoroughly enmeshed in Zionist thinking while Israeli intelligence organizations have a new crop of saya`nim in place ready to serve in Zionist covert operations.

What is a sayanim? Go to the link and it states that “Sayanim (Hebrew: “helpers”) is a term used to describe Jews living outside Israel who volunteer to provide assistance to the Mossad.[1] This assistance includes facilitating medical care, money, logistics, and even overt intelligence gathering, yet sayanim are only paid for their expenses. No official number is known, but estimates put the number of sayanim in the thousands. The existence of this large body of volunteers is one reason why the Mossad operates with fewer case officers than fellow intelligence agencies”

Now back to the link
from which I was quoting the Jewish writer originally. He says that the Lubavitcher shluchim (outreach emissaries) Gavriel Noach and Rivka Holtzberg fit the `sayanim’ profile to a “T” — especially Rivkah.

So the two people killed in Nariman House fit the Sayanim, that is Jews outside Israel who volunteer to provide assistance to Mossad, profile!

The Jewish writer of the afore-mentioned link himself asks the question: WOULD MOSSAD HAVE KILLED THE RABBI AND HIS WIFE IN NARIMAN HOUSE?

Zionists have always used dead Jews to build sympathy for Zionist goals and as cover for Zionist crimes against humanity.
Ben-Gurion explicitly stated that he would sacrifice German Jewish children for the sake of Zionism while the Zionist leadership probably learned the benefit of sacrificing Zionist operatives from the 1946 Kielce Pogrom. In this incident (Jewish) Soviet and Zionist agents probably worked together to make sure that surviving Polish Jews chose emigration to Palestine over a return to Poland.
Because the Kielce Zionist recruiters were killed during the pogrom, the events leading up to the pogrom was rendered forever unobtainable.

Some reports of the Mumbai attack indicate that the Holtzbergs rented space to the attack planners over the past few months and thereby helped make the operation far more effective.
An opportunity to interrogate the Holtzbergs would have helped investigators immensely.

Another piece of massive evidence: In a telephone interview with CBC News from outside the Center (Nariman House), freelance journalists Arun Asthana said that there are reports that some of the militants had stayed at a guest house there (Nariman House) for upto 15 days before the attack. “They had a huge mass of ammunition, arms and food there”, Asthana said.

Now other reports have also confirmed that a huge mass of food was ordered by the residents of the Nariman House. This food was enough for 30-40 people for several days. Why was this amount of food ordered? Also why was Nariman House not assaulted till the very last? A Gujarati Hindu resident of Mumbai came onto TV on CNN-IBN to say at around 3.30 AM or so, that for two months suspicious activities wree going in Nariman House. A lot of foreigners were seen coming in and going out. This matter was reported to the Police. But no one took action.
The CNN-IBN did not repeat the news; then it was only when the common people of Mumbai threatened to storm the Nariman House the NSG commandos were moved in–why this delay in assaulting Nariman House when only two terrorists were holed in there?
This is sheer official complicity and nothing else–AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE WHOLE NARIMAN HOUSE AFFAIR IS A MUST.

Israeli map sent out by Midtown Chabad

Jeff Blankfort got this map sent to him by the Jewish Week, as a form of email advertising for Chabad in New York by Joashua Metzger. Blankfort writes:
Like many other maps I have seen over the years issued by Jewish organizations, secular and religious,  for the Jewish community, there is no Green Line. No delineated West Bank or Gaza. It’s all Israel. When the Palestinians do this all hell breaks loose. When Jews do it’s the sound of silence.

Maybe someone should show this to Hillary Clinton?

Oh, by the way, here’s Chabad hosting Lev Leviev, the man who’s funded colonists on the West Bank. Who writes about this nexus–even as the 2-state solution goes down the tube?

Boycott coup: British embassy eschews Leviev’s building in Tel Aviv

Something great reported by Haaretz and now JSF: the British Embassy has changed its plans, and will not rent space in a Tel Aviv building partly-owned by Lev Leviev, the diamond merchant who has financed colonies in the West Bank. The embassy took the step after critics of Leviev called upon the Brits not to give him money.
How long before anything approaching this standard comes to the U.S., where a lot of Jews and non-Jews are all mobbed up with the colonial system in Palestine and our media avoid the story?

Rabbi Israel Weingarten makes final plea at kid molest trial

Wednesday, March 11th 2009, 2:17 AM

A Brooklyn jury Tuesday began deliberating the fate of a Hasidic rabbi charged with molesting his daughter in New York, Belgium and Israel.

Israel Weingarten faces up to 50 years in prison if he’s convicted of the shocking charges, which were brought in federal court because he is accused of transporting the victim in and out of the country to commit sexual crimes against her.

Acting as his own attorney, Weingarten delivered a rambling 90-minute closing argument Tuesday to the jury, who at times during the week-long trial appeared repulsed by his cross-examination of the victim, his ex-wife and son.

“I’m not used to what I’m doing,” Weingarten explained to the jurors. “I had to [represent myself]. I had no other way.”

He suggested his daughter had an intimate relationship with a married man in Antwerp that led her to fabricate the charges against him.

Weingarten, 59, is charged with sexually abusing the victim starting in 1990 when she was 9 until she reached the age of 18.

“Why did this child never bring a tape recorder when this was happening?” he said. “It’s impossible. It’s not true.”

The sordid charges have split the Satmar community, with one faction believing the victim’s claim and others believing she’s lying and that the actual abuser is her mother, according to court papers.

After five hours of deliberations, the jurors asked Judge John Gleeson if they could go home and resume Wednesday.

Judge considers prejudice in Rubashkin grand jury indictment

By Lynda Waddington 2/24/09 2:50 PM

Defense attorneys painted an unappealing picture of anti-Semitism for U.S. District Court Judge Linda Reade Monday during a hearing to determine if charges against a former Agriprocessors executive should be dropped, or the case moved to a different court or heard separately from others indicted in the aftermath of a massive 2008 immigration raid.

Sholom M. Rubashkin

Sholom M. Rubashkin

Sholom M. Rubashkin, the highest ranking day-to-day corporate officer at the Postville meatpacking plant, faces a total of 97 charges ranging from bank fraud to immigration-related offenses that, when combined, carry a possible maximum sentence of more than 2,000 years in prison.

The Rubashkin family — founders and former operators of the Agriprocessors kosher meatpacking plant — subscribe to one of the largest Hasidic movements in Orthodox Judaism: Chabad-Lubavitch.

Attorneys argued Monday that anti-Semitic stereotypes were present in grand jury testimony and that the resulting indictment was tainted from the beginning against their client. It’s an opinion shared by Dr. Patricia F. Kuehn, an Illinois-based consultant hired by the defense.

People who are repeatedly exposed to stereotypes “have no other option but to be prejudiced,” Kuehn testified, according to Erika Binegar of the Cedar Rapids Gazette. Kuehn specifically pointed to references to Rubashkin as a “Jewish guy with a small hat and a beard” and to religious considerations that prevent some Jews from collecting interest on loans to others of the same faith.

Prosecutors depicted Kuehn’s testimony as limited, indicting that she was privy to only portions of the grand jury testimony and that she used surveys of American attitudes and expert affidavits to construct the difference.

The strongest criticisms expressed at the hearing, according to a report filed by the Associated Press, were reserved for the press, bloggers and Iowa Gov. Chet Culver.

Stating that Rubashkin had already been convicted in the “court of public opinion,” defense attorney Guy Cook presented Reade with various news articles, editorials and blog comments.

Jim Clarity, an attorney representing Agriprocessors’ interests, referred to the pretrial publicity as “sickening” and compared the plight of mounting a defense in the Northern District of Iowa to that of the Jews facing Nazi persecution in 1939 Poland.

“Move it to Minnesota or Chicago, but not Iowa because Iowa is poison,” Clarity said.

Culver was mentioned by name due in large part to an August editorial that implied plant management had taken a “low road” and compared the situation in Postville to the scene described in novelist Upton Sinclair’s “The Jungle.”

Reade, who reversed an earlier decision to keep Rubashkin behind bars until his September trial date and allowed review of grand jury testimony by the defense’s consultant, did not make a ruling following Monday’s testimony.

Reade ordered Feb. 18 that grand jury testimony could be viewed by Dr. Mollie Marti, an expert trial witness identified by Rubashkin’s legal team. But a conflict prevented Marti from attending the scheduled Monday hearing; Marti suggested Kuehn, and Reade agreed to the change.

Kuehn and Marti were previously partners in Performance Sciences, a Cedar Rapids-based firm whose services include life coaching for athletic and corporate clients. Kuehn holds a master’s degree in social psychology and is licensed to practice law in Illinois. She also previously worked as a trial consultant with Carlton Trial Consulting & Research Center in Chicago prior to becoming an independent trial consultant.

Rubashkin is charged with:

  • Conspiracy to harbor undocumented aliens (maximum 10 years imprisonment)
  • Harboring undocumented aliens and aiding and abetting the harboring of aliens (maximum 10 years imprisonment)
  • Conspiracy to commit document fraud (maximum five years imprisonment)
  • Aiding and abetting document fraud (maximum 10 years imprisonment)
  • Aiding and abetting aggravated identity theft (combined maximum 12 years imprisonment)
  • Bank fraud (combined maximum 450 years imprisonment)
  • False statements and reports to a bank (combined maximum 1,260 years imprisonment)
  • Money laundering and aiding and abetting money laundering (combined maximum 200 years imprisonment)
  • Willful violations of an order of the secretary of agriculture (combined maximum 100 years imprisonment)

Agriprocessors, which never fully recovered from the immigration raid in May, has limited production while under the supervision of a Chapter 11 bankruptcy trustee. A sale of assets has been scheduled for March 23.

Jerusalem – Principal Suspect In Japan

Drug Smuggler Case May Be Unfit for Trial

Bentzion Miller in Court

Jerusalem – The principal suspect in a case involving alleged drug smuggling has been sent for psychiatric evaluation and may be declared unfit to stand trial.

The suspect, Ben Zion Miller, is accused of smuggling 90,000 Ecstasy pills from Holland to Japan.

The Tel Aviv District Court ordered the evaluation in response to an appeal against his detention in which his attorney, Yair Nehorai, argued that he suffered from manic depression and might be unfit to stand trial.

Miller and Yisrael Eisenbach, both Satmar Hasidim from Jerusalem, were arrested early last week by the Tel Aviv police on suspicion of involvement in a drug-smuggling ring uncovered last April when Japanese police arrested three Satmar Hasidim at an airport in Shiba, Japan and found 90,000 Ecstasy pills in their suitcases. That prompted an international investigation involving Interpol as well as national police forces, that ultimately resulted in the arrest of Miller and Eisenbach.

The latter was released one day after being arrested, but Miller remained in detention, prompting Nehorai to appeal.

In his appeal, Nehorai said that Miller was on regular medication to treat his manic depression, and the state had even declared him partially disabled on account of this illness. Therefore, he argued, Miller might be unfit to stand trial, and if so, there was no justification for continuing to hold him in detention – not to mention the fact that the state would be wasting its time and money by pursuing the case against him.

Moreover, Nehorai argued, Miller’s family was very concerned that the pressures of being interrogated by the police and the poor conditions in the lock-up would cause his fragile mental condition to deteriorate, provoking a bout of full-fledged depression.

The court agreed that Miller should be sent for psychiatric evaluation in the next few days. However, it decided, he should remain in detention until the results of the evaluation are received.
